This approach can be considered somewhat analogous to the separation of signaling and media already described for H.323. This separation is important, because the signaling may pass via one or more proxy or redirect servers while the media stream itself takes a more direct path. Figure 5-2 shows the logical separation between signaling and session data. Devices like Raspberry Pi are based around an SoC. The disadvantage is that, unlike a full-size computer, they are locked into their configuration. The advantage of an SoC is that it is cheaper, smaller, and more energy efficient. The Session Initiation Protocol is a signaling protocol that enables the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) by defining the messages sent between endpoints. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) trunking is a service offered by a communications service provider that uses the protocol to provision voice over IP.
SIP signaling should be considered separately from the media itself, however. Software for an SoC usually abstracts functionality so that it can be easily programmed and connected to. It is likely that SIP messages will pass through some of the same physical facilities as the media to be exchanged. Although strictly speaking, SIP is written such that the media to be used in a given session could use any transport protocol, the media will commonly be exchanged using the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) as the transport protocol. In this case, the telephone will encrypt the user’s telephone password. This header contains the data that must be used by UAC to encrypt his or her credentials. Without proper telecom security system, hackers can easily tap into encrypter calls, distribute SIP malware and otherwise tamper with the VoIP services you are provisioning. SIP, in combination with other protocols, is used to describe the session characteristics to potential session participants. As you may already know, SIP borrowed heavily from other Internet protocols and the Proxy-Authenticate header was lifted straight from HTTP.
